About Lake Lights

Lake Lights & Holiday Nights began in 2024, sparked by an idea from local resident Julianna Carlson. What started with our wonderful local businesses has grown into a community-wide celebration.

In 2024, 13 businesses competed. In 2025 we added homes, and 41 displays lit up the map. This year, we want to see your house on it too.

Our mission: Light Up the Lakes!

• Bring on the holiday cheer! Fill homes and storefronts with as many lights and displays as possible, and bring back the nostalgia of the family light tour (with a little friendly competition).
• Become a winter destination! Shine a light on Detroit Lakes in December. Get people downtown, touring and shopping local.

It's free to enter and not a fundraiser. No display is too small. Everyone can get on the map.

How it works

1. Sign up at lakelightsdl.com/join. It takes about 90 seconds.
2. Get on the map. We review each entry, usually within 24 hours.
3. Tour the lights. Use the map to plan a drive and stop at local businesses along the way.
4. Judging. Two panels of three judges visit in person.
5. People's Choice. The public votes for a favorite home and business, Dec 13–20.
6. Winners are announced around Dec 21.

Lake Lights is a labor of love for Shaun and Julianna (Anna) Carlson, Detroit Lakes residents and parents who love a good light tour.
